Gerry wrote this solo for his daughter Melissa in December 1992. This solo was based on an original ballad-style melody. It's a slow waltz-time tune with three-bar phrasing. It's written in an A-B-A form. The main melody is present in the middle. The solo starts with a faster duple variation of the tune in C minor. There is a short, slower cadenza that modulates to C major and the main "ballad" tune. This middle section transitions pretty abruptly to the ending variation, back in C minor, until just before the ending where it changes back to the C major, ending on a happier (if not higher) note.
Melissa played this at a solo competition while in 8th grade at Hendrick Middle School and received a "1" rating. Gerry later scored this solo for brass band and Melissa played this while a member of The Salvation Army Texas Brass Band, on a tour of Norway and Russia. She also played this at the retirement service of her grandparents Commissioners Harold and Polly Shoults, accompanied by the Chicago Staff Band.
