Ave Verum Corpus

Play Audio Track

Ave Verum Corpus (Mozart K 618) is a motet in D Major, composed in 1791. Mozart wrote this for Anton Still, a friend who was the church musician of St Stephan, in Baden bei Wien. The motet was composed for the feast of Corpus Christi, scored for SATB choir, string instruments, and organ.

This transcription is for a trombone or euphonium quartet. To facilitate the range of these instruments, it is transposed from D Major to Ab Major.

The English text:
Hail, true Body, born
of the Virgin Mary,
having truly suffered, sacrificed
on the cross for mankind,
from whose pierced side
water and blood flowed:
Be for us a foretaste [of the Heavenly banquet] in the trial of death!
O sweet Jesus, O holy Jesus, O Jesus, son of Mary,
have mercy on me. Amen.
